Vietnamese President Luong Cuong welcomed French counterpart Emmanuel Macron who offered to be a "reliable partner" to Vietnam amid U.S trade pressure.
The two countries signed deals on nuclear power and vaccines. The leaders looked on as their defence ministers exchanged documents. Other deals included Vietjet agreeing to buy 20 Airbus planes.
In his first official visit to Vietnam, Macron got the red carpet treatment from his hosts during the welcoming ceremony.
Macron told Vietnam that France can cooperate with them but said world order must be based on law. Vietnam was a French colony until 1954.
Macron will also head to Indonesia and Singapore as he tries to strengthen French relations in the region.
