Hong Kong International Airport's Terminal 2, which is currently under expansion, will begin phased operations on September 23rd. From the second quarter of next year, some departing passengers can use the new terminal.

Hong Kong International Airport's Terminal 2 is taking shape, five and a half years after reconstruction work began. The first to open will be the waiting hall for coaches with 41 parking spaces for tour buses, cross-boundary coaches and private cars.

The Airport Authority says from March to April next year, more than 10 airlines will have their check-in counters moved to the new Terminal 2. They include Hong Kong Airlines, HK Express and Greater Bay Airlines, which altogether serve about 20 percent of total passengers.

In the initial phase, departing passengers will have to take the automated train to board their flights back in Terminal 1.

A new concourse in Terminal 2 between the north and centre runways with boarding gates is expected to open in late 2025 or early 2026. Arriving passengers will be able to collect their baggage and clear immigration there directly.

The three-runway system has been in use for around six months. The Airport Authority estimates passenger numbers to reach 63 to 66 million this year -- close to 90 percent of pre-pandemic levels.

Once fully operational, Terminal 2 is expected to boost the airport's capacity to 120 million passengers a year.
