Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau said the effects from the memorandums signed during the chief executive's tour in the Middle East are better than expected.
This as he stressed the city could possibly join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) by September this year.
Speaking with TVB News, Yau noted the city has been dealing with the fallout of the Sino-American trade war by boosting trade ties with other international parties.
The commerce chief, however, reminded residents that the city's business relationships with its Middle Eastern partners should not be compared with that of the U.S., adding that they are incomparable owing to the size of the United States.
He said the city's business ties with Washington have always constituted a minor portion of Hong Kong's overall trade, noting that the city should further orient itself towards the growing markets of Southeast Asia.
