European markets fell sharply on Friday after U.S. President Donald Trump escalated trade tensions with the European Union.
Trump is proposing 50 percent tariffs on all good imported from the EU starting on June 1.
The announcement reignited investor fears over the economic fallout of a renewed transatlantic trade war, with Trump also targeting tech giant Apple.
Posting on his social platform, Trump said he is proposing for sweeping tariffs on the EU because of stalled negotiations in Brussels.
"Trade talks are going nowhere," he wrote, adding that the EU "was formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE."
One analyst said the latest threat is worse than the worst-case scenario.
Trump also warned Apple that he may impose a 25 percent tariff on any iPhones manufactured outside the U.S.
A 50 percent levy on EU imports could raise consumer prices on everything from German cars to Italian olive oil.
EU's total exports to the United States last year totalled about 500 billion euros, led by Germany, Ireland and Italy.
Pharmaceuticals, cars and auto parts, chemicals and aircraft were among the largest exports, according to EU data.
