The MTR's Tseung Kwun O Line was suspended for about three hours on Thursday evening because of an electric equipment fault that occured between North Point and Tiu Keng Leng stations.
The service resumed at about 10:30 p.m.
Commuters were stranded at North Point MTR station after the incident. Announcements of disrupted train services were repeatedly played over the station's speaker system.
Some people sat down as they waited for updates, while others tried to seek the latest information from MTR staff. Engineering staff arrived at the station to inspect.
Meanwhile, passengers were allowed to exit the station without paying.
Police also arrived at the scene. Some passengers complained about the MTR's arrangements, saying they could have organised it better.
The Tseung Kwan O platform was also packed with commuters.
At Tiu Keng Leng, passengers formed a long queue trying to board the MTR's free shuttle buses, which would transport them to Tseung Kwan O and Po Lam.
Several passengers were frustrated by the lengthy waiting time and described MTR's organisation as "messy."
Lawmaker Gary Zhang said the railway company needs to conduct a full inspection of its trains' hardware and engineering manpower.
By 10:33 p.m. the Tsueng Kwan O Line resumed service.
Speaking to the media, the MTR apologised for the service suspension and said the incident was the result of a circuit breaker trip and a signal system glitch.
KH LEE,Chief Operations Engineering Maintenance: "We have to remove the train one by one. In the course of the train removal, we also found the thresholder causing the overhead light trip again. After all the trains being removed from the site,
we had a detailed inspection on the concerned section."
The railway company said a detailed inspection and investigation would be carried out in the early hours of Friday.
