CK Hutchison today said the company will only proceed with the sale of dozens of ports around the globe in accordance with the law.

This came after the multinational company became embroiled in controversy after it decided to sell its 43 ports including those in the Panama Canal.

Hong Kong's CK Hutchison earlier announced plans to sell 43 ports, including two in the Panama Canal, to a consortium consisting of U.S. asset management firm BlackRock.

At its annual shareholders meeting, CK Hutchison confirmed that Mediterranean Shipping Company would be the main buyer of the ports.

CK Hutchison stressed that it would not proceed with the deal under unlawful and non-compliance circumstances.

The conglomerate said a lengthy scrutiny process must be carried out before the ports' transaction can be completed, adding it would fully cooperate with authorities during the process.

Some smaller shareholders opposed the ports sale, saying it is wrong to sell the ports to overseas companies.

CK Hutchison announced its ports sale in March. Since then, the decision has drawn the attention and criticisms of mainland sources and authorities, saying the company should not proceed with the transaction because it involves national interests.
