A man died after being lashed by a steel cable that snapped in an industrial accident on a ship moored at Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter.

The worker suffered severe injuries to his right forearm, fainted and could not be resuscitated.

The ship remained docked at the shelter.

Police say the 61-year-old victim was hit by the cable while working on the boat at about 1am.

Sources say the steel cable was used to link the the ship and a tugboat.

It is suspected that the cable snapped hitting the man's arm.

The cable may have broken due to waves produced by a passing turbojet.

The victim was sent to Ruttonjee Hospital and was later pronounced dead.
