The Transport Department is gradually installing a new generation of electronic audible traffic signal devises for visually impaired pedestrians, which are expected to be completed in 2027.
A new device has been installed at the pedestrian crossing outside Charming Garden on Hoi Wang Road in Mongkok.
Press the button at the bottom, and the device will read out the name of the street at the pedestrian crossing.
Pedestrians can also activate the "green doll" to cross the road in a contactless manner.
There is a tactile map on the right side of the device, which provides visually impaired people with information about the layout of the crossing.
As the sound volume of the crossing device is lower at night, the new device has added an adjustment function. The visually impaired can use a special wireless remote control or the "Hong Kong Easy Mobility" application to increase the sound by about 5 decibels.
This function will be implemented from the third quarter. The Transport Department will distribute 15,000 remote controls to the visually impaired through concern groups.
