The Israeli prime minister says his decision to allow more aid into Gaza came under pressure from allies.

Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel's greatest friends were concerned about "images of hunger" and that was a problem that needed to be solved.

He said some U.S. senators, who are enthusiastic supporters of Israel, would withdraw their support unless Israel distributed more food and medicine.

Netanyahu underlined he remains in control in his quest for victory against Hamas saying "basic food will be allowed to avert a hunger crisis."

His admission came as Israel pounded targets, with dozens of strikes mostly in southern Gaza. More than thirty Palestinians are said to have died on Monday across the strip.

In Khan Younis, residents claim Israelis disguised as civilians shot and killed a man and detained his wife and child.

Witnesses say the gunmen had heavy air support so must have been soldiers in civilian clothes.
