As many as 29 million Poles could vote for a new president in elections, with most saying the war in neighbouring Ukraine as well as security and unity is at the forefront of their minds.

Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski is the favourite among 13 contenders. He is an ally of Prime Minister Donald Tusk who has supported Ukraine in their war against Russia.

Although most Poles support this, an influx of migrants from the east has caused tensions to rise in Poland.

That will be seized on by Trzaskowski's likely nearest challenger Karol Nawrocki, an independent but backed by the conservatives.

50 percent is needed to win. Failing that, the top two will enter a runoff on June 1st.

Most of the power and policy making is in the hands of the prime minister, but alignment with the president is important because the head of state can influence security and veto legislation.
