The Customs and Excise Department today held a recruitment experience day for potential applicants for its inspector position.

On Saturday, the gym room at Tuen Mun's Customs College was filled with potential inspector candidates. A physical fitness test is one of the key assessments that candidates must pass.

To examine leg power, candidates must perform a standing long jump test. A five-mark grading system is set up, and points are given depending on how far they can jump.

Another test is the 800-metre run. Candidates will run on a race track on the day of the actual assessment.

Agility is an important physical element. The threading test requires candidates to climb, turn and slide through the wooden ladder in the shortest possible time.

Threading is a physical test that is unique to the Customs and Excise Department. Candidates are advised to practise shuttle runs and 50-metre sprints as preparation for the test.

While some found threading challenging, they also said the written test would require study time.

An applicant said: "I want to spend more time to study the recent news because there are a lot of sections that will involve questions on the news of Hong Kong. I think this is beneficial for me to provide a more valid answer to the examiners.

As to why they want to join Customs, some said it is the nature of the job.

Another one said: "Because Customs is a very diverse department that involves many working positions. It's gonna be really challenging and also there will be a lot of meaningful, interesting work.

The application period for the inspector position is between May 22nd and June 11th.

Eddie Lai, the commandant of Hong Kong Customs College, said: "The successful candidates for this round will receive training in the first half of next year. I recommend the candidate to focus on the preparation for this recruitment exercise."

The Customs College will hold another experience day on May 31st.
