The number of COVID infections in Hong Kong has been on the rise, but this year's death and serious cases are down from last year.

Professor Lau Yu-lung, chairman of the government's Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases, said while the number of COVID infection cases this year is similar to the peak period last year, there are fewer serious and death cases.

Professor Lau said the figures covered both government and private clinics.

He said serious and death cases for inpatients this year were fewer than last year. This means the overall seriousness of COVID is less than last year. Lau expects COVID cases will become less serious over the coming years.
