Hang Seng Bank says it is laying off 1 percent of the manpower of its core operations.

George Leung, a senior advisor at Hang Seng Bank, said the actual layoff numbers could be changed on a daily basis. This came as the local lender has been cutting staff across departements since March.

Hang Seng Bank on Thursday issued an statement, saying the company needs to make suitable business adjustments to increase its operational efficiency. The statement says the bank will create new job positions in the face of rapid-changing market environment.

The bank also says the number of affected employees would be roughly 1 percent, without mentioning the exact figure.

Hang Seng Bank's senior advisor George Leung said some work in the company had been replaced by technology, but not all employees have the required new skills.

Leung said the layoff involves multiple departments, affecting staff from all positions.

Meanwhile, Hang Seng Bank says supportive measures will be provided to impacted staff who had been using the bank's staff mortgage arrangements.
