The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said a dried fish product was imported from a regulated Japanese prefecture -- and is suspected to be in breach of the Food Safety Order. The product concerned has not entered the market.

Authorities found the 30 cartons of dried fish product manufactured in Niigata Prefecture.

According to the Food Safety Order, all aquatic products originating from the 10 metropolis or prefectures, namely Tokyo, Fukushima and Niigata, are prohibited from being imported into and supplied in Hong Kong if they are harvested, manufactured, processed or packed on or after August 24, 2023. They include aquatic products, sea salt and seaweed.

The Centre for Food Safety said prosecution will be instituted against the importer should there be sufficient evidence. Investigations are ongoing.
