Rodrigo Duterte will again win the mayorship of Davao City after mid-term elections in the Philippines despite being detained and facing charges at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

The Former Philippine President had established a commanding lead, securing 405,000 votes compared to 49,000 for his closest rival with votes still being tallied.

Under Philippine law, a person can run for office as long as they have not been convicted.

Rodrigo faces charges at the ICC of crimes against humanity for his crack down on illegal drugs during his presidency between 2016-2022. He could be the first Asian leader to be convicted there, Duterte denies the charges.

His daughter Vice President Sara Duterte greeted supporters as she arrives at polling station in Davao City.

The spotlight is on the race for the Senate that could determine her political future. She faces an impeachment trial in the Senate in July over accusations of plotting to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and corruption allegations. Sara denies all charges. She claims they were spread by her political rivals to destroy her.

Sara Duterte is considered a strong contender for the 2028 presidential race. But if convicted by the Senate, she will be removed as vice president and disqualified from holding public office. To be acquitted, she needs at least nine of the 24 senators to vote in her favour.

Meanwhile, allies of current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr looked set to win at least half of the available Senate seats. Over 68 million Filipinos registered to vote in the midterms.
