U.S. President Donald Trump has promised to sign an executive order on Monday aimed at bringing down the prices of prescription drugs, a proposal that will likely face fierce opposition by the pharmaceutical industry.

In a social media post, Trump said he's going to institute what is known as "most favoured nation's policy" whereby the U.S. federal government would tie what it pays pharmaceutical companies for those drugs to the lowest prices paid by a group of other economically advanced countries.

This as the drug prices in the U.S. are up to ten times more than in other countries and have long drawn the ire of both parties.

Trump claimed that his order, if implemented, could lower prescription drug and pharmaceutical prices by between 30 and 80 percent.

"Our country will finally be treated fairly," Trump said, adding that the reduction would be counterbalanced by higher costs in other countries.
