Hamas is hoping the release of Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander will help broker a ceasefire and put pressure on Israel to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The 21-year-old who was a soldier in the Israeli Army should be released tomorrow. Alexander is thought to be the last surviving American hostage held by the Palestinian group.

Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu told a closed session of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that Hamas are making a goodwill gesture towards the U.S. and President Donald Trump.

The prime minister's office said the U.S. told Israel that Hamas's freeing of Alexander would lead to negotiations for the release of more hostages.

Hamas released 38 hostages under a ceasefire agreement in January but Israel's military resumed ground operations in Gaza in March as the deal fell apart. Israel say the offensive will continue until the remaining 59 hostages are freed and Gaza is demilitarised.
