There's also a call for greater societal acceptance towards autistic children and their carers on Mother's Day.

Single mother Maggie has been the sole caregiver of her 21-year-old autistic son.

Maggie said they must deal with much judgement and misunderstanding when out and about.

She said autistic kids sometimes engage in behaviour deemed unusual to others, such as scratching themselves, because of their sensory processing differences or anxiety.

Such self-regulating actions are known as "stimming" and people who aren't familiar with it may misinterpret them as strange or even aggressive.

She hopes the community can try to understand them more, saying that autistic children can also lead fulfilling lives.
