The Department of Homeland Security of the United States released bodycam video of the incident leading to Newark Mayor Ras Baraka arrest. Baraka was detained at a federal immigration detention centre in Newark, New Jersey.

The dramatic footage shows several ICE agents, some wearing face coverings, surrounding Baraka. As protesters cried out, "Shame," Baraka was dragged back through the gate in handcuffs.

The Mayor denied trespassing during a confrontation with ICE agents which appears to have led to his arrest.

The 55-year-old has been protesting at the centre's opening this week. He was released on Friday, the investigation is "ongoing."

Witnesses say Baraka attempted to enter the building with three members of New Jersey's congressional delegation. When federal officials blocked his entry, a heated argument broke out. The arrest followed from a public area later.

Baraka's running to succeed Governor of New Jersey Phil Murphy and has fought with the Trump administration over what he calls illegal immigrations.
