Vladimir Putin has proposed direct talks "without preconditions" with Ukraine in Istanbul on Thursday. The offer came in response to Ukraine and its allies urging Moscow to commit to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire.
"We propose the Kyiv authorities resume the negotiations they interrupted at the end of 2022," the Russian President said. "We are committed to serious negotiations. a real truce, which would be observed not only by Russia, but also by the Ukrainian side, would be the first step, I repeat, to a long-term, sustainable peace."
Putin referencing the unsuccessful 2022 peace talks that took place in Istanbul in the first month of Moscow's full-scale invasion, and proposed "restarting" them without preconditions.
Putin's proposal came after leaders from four major European countries - France, Poland, UK and Germany - threatened to "ratchet up pressure" on Moscow if it does not accept an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. They made this joint-statement in a visit to Kyiv.
Putin was joined by China's President Xi Jinping at Victory Day celebrations earlier this week.
