France and Poland signed a cooperation treaty including mutual security guarantees.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and French President Emmanuel Macron met in the eastern French city of Nancy to seal the deal that the two leaders say will help reinforce peace and security in Europe following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
"We want to build a truly integrated defence partnership," Macron says. "This does not replace NATO or the European Union. It strengthens the links that already exists."
Macron added that Europe has to take more responsibility to guarantee its own security without relying on the U.S.
Later, Macron boarded a train heading into Ukraine where he travelled with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The three will be in Kyiv on Saturday as calls intensify for Russia to agree a permanent ceasefire. Tusk is expected to join the trio at an event hosted by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
