The United States and United Kingdom say they have agreed on a deal that would ease tariffs and boost trade between the two traditional allies.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was on a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump as they sealed a trade deal. Trump linked the agreement to the Allied victory in World War Two.
During the conversation, Trump said: "This morning, I'm thrilled to announce that we have reached a breakthrough trade deal with the United Kingdom. Incredible country. Today is a victory day for World War II. We won the war together exactly 80 years ago, so there could be no more perfect morning to reach this historic agreement.
Trump made the announcement on Thursday at the White House, with the deal partially rolling back tariffs in certain sectors and further expanding market access for each other's products.
Britain will reduce or eliminate non-tariff barriers and expand market access for U.S. products such as beef, ethanol and some industrial goods.
The agreement also creates "a new trading union" for steel and aluminium, while the UK will remove tariffs on steel exports to the U.S.
Reports say details of the agreement still need to be finalised, and the 10 percent "reciprocal tariff" previously imposed by the United States remains in place.
Starmer praised the deal, saying: "Really important deal, this is going to boost trade between and across our countries it's going to not only protect jobs but create jobs, opening market access and as you say Donald the timing couldn't be more apt because not only was 80 years ago today that victory came for Europe after and at the end of the Second World War but of course on that day the UK and the US stood together as the closest of allies."
This is among the first bilateral agreements the U.S. has made in the wake of its controversial tariff policies.
