Many welcomed the first-ever American pope as Robert Prevost assumed the title of Pope Leo XIV.
The bells of Trujillo Cathedral in Peru toll to announce the election of Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV.
The Our Lady of Monserrat Parish in Trujillo is one of the two parishes Prevost helped build. He also had a room in the city.
With Leo XIV having spent decades in Peru as a missionary and then an archbishop, even gaining Peruvian citizenship, the parishioners here celebrated his election.
"We know Father Roberto Prevost," said Jhonatan Cruz, a former altar boy for Pope Leo. He was the first parish priest here that did great work in the whole area.
In Chicago, Pope Leo's home city, the rector of the Holy Name Cathedral said he felt a divine message.
He said: "My first reaction when I heard it was announced that Cardinal Robert Prevost was named Pope, I was in absolute shock, happily shocked."
"Here's the ironic part. When he was named in Chicago, at the moment I looked outside here in Chicago, the sun came out, the sun come out. So we say, what a coincidence the sun came out. A coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous."
In New York, the iconic Empire State Building lit up in gold and white on Thursday evening to honour the first American Pope.
Asia's largest Roman Catholic nation, the Philippines, was hoping Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, from the city of Imus, south of Manila would become the first Asian pope. Still they welcomed the election of the first-ever American pontiff.
Alexandra Ivory Bonilla said she was hoping Cardinal Tagle would be chosen but she said they should accept Pope Leo as God's plan and hopes he performs well in his new position.
China congratulated Pope Leo on his election. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing hopes that the Vatican will continue to have dialogue with China in a constructive spirit and jointly advance the improvement of China-Vatican relations.
