The election of Pope Leo XIV was welcomed by Catholics in Hong Kong.

Several Catholics in Hong Kong attended church services on Friday morning at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Caine Road after news of Leo XIV's election.

A few of the faithful shared their thoughts on the new pontiff.

Mrs. Cheung said she feels a heavy responsiblity after listening to the new pope's speech.

She hopes he will continue the path of Pope Francis and be a man of peace.

Some hope Pope Leo XIV, who is the first pope to have been born in the United States, will continue Francis' legacy of fostering an open-minded church.

Mr Ng said he hopes the new pope can lead the church to implement certain reforms.

This as Mr Poon said that because the new Pope is American, it could hint at the possibility of him influencing U.S. President Donald Trump to become more harmonious on international affairs.

He also hopes the Pope will care more about the poor and the marginalised.

The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong said Cardinal Stephen Chow and all Catholics in the city are grateful to God for choosing Leo as Pope.
