Security in Moscow was ramped up ahead of the lavish Victory Day military parade this afternoon.

Excitement was in the air as hordes of Russian residents and Chinese tourists anticipated to feel the vibe of the celebrations.

During the early hours of Friday, Russian authorities tightened security in some areas of Moscow ahead of the military parade. Roadblocks were set up along the passage towards Red Square. Armed soldiers were garrisoned at major intersections to prevent non-official personnel and vehicles from passing.

Streets where the parade convoys will be passing by were enclosed, with all shops halting services. Security forces were on patrol on Red Square and in the vicinity of the famed Saint Basil's Cathedral.

Many people across Russia went to Moscow during the four-day public holiday in time for commemorations. A resident from St. Petersburg said: "It's very great because it's our victory of my grandmother, grandfather, my father, my mother."

Some Chinese tourists were also there to enjoy the festival vibes. Miss Xiao said she's eagerly looking forward to the performances by contingents from the Chinese Liberation Army honour guard, which would be the highlight of the event.

Internet restrictions would be in place across several regions, including Moscow, during the Victory Day celebrations.

A news centre close to Red Square offers LIVE room and studios for certified foreign journalists to watch the live broadcast and cover the event.
