U.S. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost elected the 267th Pope

Sixty-nine-year-old U.S. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected the 267th Pope. He took the name Pope Leo XIV. The new Pope was greeted with huge cheers from thousands gathered in St Peter's Square.
"May peace be with all of you," he said from the Vatican balcony.
Chicago-born Prevost worked for many years as a missionary in Peru.
He is the first American pope in the history of the Roman Catholic Church.
