A four-month-old boy who suffered a brain haemorrhage is suspected of having been abused. He remains in critical condition at Queen Mary Hospital.

Police have arrested a 57-year-old woman in connection with the case. She will appear at Eastern Magistrates' Courts tomorrow.

The baby has been admitted to the intensive care unit of Queen Mary Hospital. Sources say he was in a half-conscious state on Monday afternoon when family members took him to Gleneagles Hospital.

He was then transferred to Queen Mary Hospital. The hospital alerted the police after discovering the baby had suffered a brain haemorrhage and suspected he is a victim of shaken baby syndrome.

After investigation, the police arrested a female relative of the baby on Tuesday evening. Sources say the suspect moved into the residential unit of the baby's family in January this year.

Shaken baby syndrome is a brain injury which happens when an infant or toddler is shaken violently. Such action can cause serious long-term brain damage leading to permanent disabilities and even death.

A paediatrician said shake baby syndrome cases that ended up in hospitals are often in a moderate or severe condition.

ELLIS HON, Specialist in Paediatrics: "Diagnosis itself is not difficult. As to who is the so-called proprietor, who is the person who commits this deed, I think is difficult, but it's not the role of the paediatrician to immediately try to determine who has done this. Our job is to try to stabilise the baby and treat the baby as soon as possible."

Hon suggests people should seek medical help quickly if they notice something unusual about a baby in the family.
