Germany's conservative leader Friedrich Merz has won the second ballot in parliament and succeeded in his bid to secure the top job of Chancellor.

Merz is set to take over the position without previously having served in government.

A total of 325 lawmakers have voted in favour of Merz in the second ballot in Bundestag, bringing him over the necessary 316 threshold to win the election.

His appointment has been approved by the German president.

69-year-old Merz suffered a historic debacle in the first round of voting hours ago, in which he got 310 votes - six short of a majority.

Merz's Christian Democratic Union party won an election in February. He later formed a coalition with the centre-left Social Democrats and the coalition has 328 seats altogether.

As a trained lawyer, Merz has vowed to prioritise the unity and security of Europe as it grapples with the Trump administration in the U.S. and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
