The coroner inquest into the Lamma Island ferry collision began today. The 2012 tragedy took the lives of 39 people.
The inquest was held at West Kowloon Law Courts this morning. The court read out witness statements of the then ferry captain of the Lamma IV, and several passengers.
The Department of Justice will summon 92 witnesses and read out 166 witness statements over the entire inquest. Juries are not included in this process. Coroner Monica Chow said the purpose of the inquest is to discover the truth by investigating the accident.
The ferry collision happened on October 1st, 2012, involving the Lamma IV and the Sea Smooth.
At that time, passengers on the Lamma IV were about to watch the National Day fireworks display in the harbour when the Sea Smooth crashed into them.
