Cardinals from across the globe will meet at the Vatican this week to decide who will be the next leader of the Catholic church.

Although they hail from 70 different countries, the 133 cardinals seem united in finding a pope who will be able to make the 2,000-year-old church credible and relevant in today's world, especially to young people.

Tracey Furniss has more.

The Vatican is in a flurry of activity this week as cardinals hold private, informal meetings to reflect on the Catholic Church's future and the qualities needed in the next pope.

Cardinal William Goh, Archbishop of Singapore said: "We do meet together in small groups as well, yes. And I think it is... and also interventions, the most important interventions,
because it's here how we get to hear the different views. And as I said, being a pope is for the whole world, not just for Catholics."

Ahead of the conclave of cardinals that takes place Wednesday, all the support staff including cleaners, cooks, doctors, nurses will take an oath of secrecy in the Pauline Chapel.

Trisha Thomas at The Associated Press said: "The Vatican is holding an oath-taking ceremony this afternoon for those people who will be working inside the conclave bubble helping the 133 cardinals who will be electing the next pope. These people include special technicians who if needed can come in and help the cardinals make sure they get the right chemicals so we either see a black smoke if no pope is elected, or a white smoke if a new pope has been chosen."

The cardinals themselves will take their oath on Wednesday in the Sistine Chapel before they cast their first ballots.

Just a few miles away, nearly 900 nuns met Monday to chart a course forward and pray for the cardinals to make the right choice for pope.

The International Union of Superiors General that leads more than 450,000 nuns around the world will be holding its plenary assembly coincidentally at the same time as the conclave.
