The Cheung Chau Bun Scrambling Competition kicked off at the stroke of midnight on Monday evening, with 12 finalists fighting for glory.
Last year's "Bun King" and "Bun Queen", firefighter Yip Kin-man and nurse Janet Kung, participated in this year's race.
Each competitor aimed to grab as many buns as possible within three minutes, with higher points awarded for buns collected near the top.
Embracing a mixture of tradition and modernity, the once male-only race now allows the participation of female competitors.
The bun festival itself dates back to the 18th century, when Cheung Chau residents who suffered greatly from a plague believed the offering of buns to detities would end the outbreak.
Within a time limit of three minutes, all contestants have to come back to the ground, otherwise they will be disqualified.
After the scores were counted, the winner in the female category is Kung Tze-shan, and the winner in the male category is Kwok Ka-ming, both former champions.
