Tourists flock to HK as mainland’s Golden Week holidays continue

Today marks the third day of the May 1st Golden Week holidays in the mainland.
Tourists continue to make their way to Hong Kong, with close to 290,000 people entering the city as of 4 p.m. today, among which 60 percent consist of mainland visitors.
This as mainland tourists entering Hong Kong over the first two days of this year's Golden Week holidays exceeded last year's figure for the same period by over 30 percent.
Hong Kong's landmarks remain packed with visitors on the third day of the mainland's May 1st Golden Week holidays.
Tourists lined the streets outside the iconic Yau Ma Tei Police Station, while vintage camera enthusiasts flocked to the bustling markets of Apliu Street in Sham Shui Po.
Many were seen embracing the rising trend of being photographed while posing next to the city's bus stop signs.
Over on Hong Kong Island, cinephiles made their pilgrimage to the colossal Yik Cheong Building in Quarry Bay, popularly known as the Monster Building.
This tourist from Hunan said he had to visit the Monster Building after seeing it in a Transformers movie.
And the Peak continued to see endless queues of eager visitors.
Despite local staff notifying tourists that they could be queueing for at least two hours, many felt the wait was worth it.
This visitor from Sichuan said she could not wait to see the view from the Peak Tram.
While this Beijing tourist found the Peak to be much more of an international landmark compared with many sites in the mainland, and wanted to experience the cultural diversity.
In Central, a queue was formed for the Hong Kong Observation Wheel even before it began operations.
Mainland tourists visiting Hong Kong during this year's May 1st Golden Week holidays already reached over 220,000 over the first day, which is a 22-percent increase compared with the same period last year.
Day 2 recorded an even higher figure at over 260,000, a 40-percent growth from the year before.
