The Foreign Ministry in Beijing called on the Philippines and Japan to seek peace as the navy carried out "routine and justified" patrols in the South China Sea.

In the Philippines, Japan's Shigeru Ishiba was given a martial arts displayby the coast guard having signed security agreements with Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The prime minister has criticised China's use of "force" at seaand later boarded a Filipino vessel previously involved in altercations with China.

Japan and the Philippines are proposing defence pacts and training exercises in what appears to be a rebuke of Beijing. The Philippines are also holding annual "Balikatan" military drills with the U.S. which involves manoeuvres in or over the disputed South China Sea.

GUO JIAKUN: "China has all along believed that exchanges and cooperation between countries should not target any third party or harm their interests. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese aggression. During World War II, Japan committed aggression against the Philippines and other East Asian countries and exercised colonial rule over them."
