Vietnam has been celebrating 50 years since the end of the war with America.

The country was reunified on the April 30th, 1975. Festivities culminated in a military parade in Ho Chi Minh City.

Thousands camped overnight to be part of the celebration which featured a float with a huge Lac bird, the emblem of Vietnam, and another with a portrait of revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh. The communist-run north seized this city, then named Saigon, from the U.S.-backed south.

The last American helicopters left their embassy at 7:53 a.m. 50 years ago today.

Reflecting on the historic day, Vietnam's Communist party chief To Lam called it "a victory of faith" and "for justice over tyranny," adding Vietnam will remain united forever.

Washington was represented at the parade today, having restored relations with Vietnam 30 years ago although it is currently threatening them with huge trade tariffs.
