In Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party has won Monday's federal election, capping a stunning turnaround in fortunes fuelled by U.S. President Donald Trump's annexation threats and trade war.
But the party is short of a majority in parliament.
In a victory speech before supporters in Ottawa, Carney stressed the importance of Canadian unity in the face of the threats coming from Washington.
The Liberals looked headed for a crushing defeat until the American president started attacking Canada's economy and threatening its sovereignty, suggesting Canada should become the 51st U.S. state.
That infuriated Canadians and stoked a surge in nationalism, which helped the Liberals flip the election narrative and win a fourth-straight term in power.
MARK CARNEY, Prime Minister of Canada: "President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, that will never ever happen. Our old relationship with the United States, a relationship based on steadily increasing integration, is over. The system of open global trade anchored by the United States, a system that Canada has relied on since the Second World War, a system that, well, not perfect, has helped deliver prosperity for our country for decades, is over."
This Toronto resident's decision was also based on Trump and his disrespect for Canada.
DUNCAN GARROW, Toronto Resident: "There's only so many times that you can hear, you know, "51st state" and "governor," this and all that disrespect that's coming that you have to think, you know, at some point you have to take it seriously, and you shouldn't be disrespected in that way."
In a concession speech and with his own House of Commons seat still in doubt, opposition Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre vowed to keep fighting for Canadians.
