Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a three-day ceasefire to mark the 80th anniversary of victory for the Soviet Union and its allies in World War II.

The ceasefire from May 8th to the 10th is seen by some as a signal that Putin is interested in peace to end the three-year war with Ukraine.

But Ukraine questioned why Putin would not agree to its call for an immediate ceasefire lasting at least 30 days to pave the way for diplomacy.

Rescuers in Ukraine's Dnipopetrovsk region look for survivors after a Russian strike killed a 12-year-old child and injured three others, including a six-year-old.

Ukraine said more than 100 Russian drones carried out strikes across the country on Monday.

The attacks came as Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a unilateral, 72-hour ceasefire from May 8th to May 10th.

Putin attended a lawmakers' meeting in St. Petersburg, where he thanked legislators for their contribution to the war effort.

He said the ceasefire is in celebration of the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II by the Soviet Union and its allies.

On May 9th of the truce, Putin will host international leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping to celebrate the occasion.

In a statement, the Kremlin urged Ukraine to follow its example. It said any violations by the Ukrainian side would trigger an "adequate and effective response" from Moscow.

It's the second truce announced by Putin this month after a 30-hour Easter ceasefire, during which both sides accused each other of violations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia is deceiving the United States, which is trying to broker peace, and the world.

He said why wait until May 8th? Why does Moscow not begin a 30-day ceasefire proposed many weeks ago by the U.S. if they are sincere about peace?

His fellow Ukrainians are also sceptical. One lawyer in Kyiv said he has little trust in Putin, or whether Russia will adhere to any ceasefire.

Another man, a soldier with the 156th Brigade, said Russia will use the truce to move weapons to the front lines. That is not a truce, he said.

The White House reiterated the frustrations of President Donald Trump.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said: "He thinks that he is increasingly frustrated with leaders of both countries. He wants to see a permanent ceasefire. I understand Vladimir Putin this morning offered a temporary ceasefire. The president has made it clear he wants to see a permanent ceasefire first to stop the killing, stop the bloodshed."
