Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held bilateral talks with his overseas counterparts on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting taking place in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro. Wang has called for a bolstering of cooperation between BRICS members in times of tumult. Overshadowed by Washington's unilateral tariffs, senior diplomats from the group are set to produce a joint statement reaffirming the centrality of multilateral trade negotiations.

Danni Zhou reports.

Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday. It's their second get-together after they last met on April 1st. Wang said there are new changes in the international situation, and that we live in an era where change is normal. Despite this, China and Russia's mutual trust and mutual support remain unchanged, he contended, adding that both sides should work to transform the consensus between the two leaders into achievements in various fields.

Wang told Lavrov that unsettled unilateralism is battling multilateralism, while pro and anti-hegemony forces wrestle in the international arena. This makes unity and cooperation among BRICS members ever more important in strategic value. Wang pointed out that China and Russia, as two founding members of the group, must enhance coordination within the BRICS framework to deepen and expand cooperation with developing nations and emerging economies.

Providing an update on the Ukraine crisis, Lavrov reiterated Moscow's willingness to embark on peace talks with Kyiv, without preconditions. The remarks were followed by Wang elaborating on Beijing's bid to broker peace through negotiations.

Wang later met with his Thai counterpart Maris Sangiampongsa and welcomed Thailand's participation as a BRICS partner country. Wang pointed to the necessity for China and Thailand, two important members of the Global South, to ramp up exchanges amid rising uncertainty. Meanwhile, China has vowed to consolidate friendly cooperative relations with neighbouring countries, in an effort to help them benefit from the fruits of Chinese modernisation.

Practical collaboration will deepen in fields of connectivity, digital economy and tech innovation. China and Thailand will work together to achieve greater progress in the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation, injecting more certainty into regional peace and stability.

Wang also met with Ethiopia's Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, saying he hopes the country can play a greater role in the development and revitalisation of the African continent and beyond.
