The Hong Kong Jockey Club recently awarded scholarships to more than 100 young people. Some of them are going to use the financial support to make inventions as a way to give back to society.
In the face of adversities and setbacks, some may blame fate, while others may choose to overcome the obstacles proactively.
James Li is one of the 116 Hong Kong Jockey Club scholarships awardees. He was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy at the age of three, and he faced a gradual loss of muscle strength and reliance on a wheelchair.
In his senior secondary school years, he teamed up with two friends to design an assistive input device, which allows people with dexterity issues to navigate computers with head movements.
James Li, HK Jockey Club Striding On Scholarship Awardee: "Fatigue is a very real issue. It will be very challenging to do very simple daily things, fetching water, studying or just getting up doing something. For the people who say there are no challenges in life, guess what? They are lying. There are challenges. But it makes you realise that even though you acknowledge there are challenges, it makes you step over them, and you can jump over them and fly over them."
Also awarded a scholarship is a first-year medical student Jenna Choi, who aspires to improve the health of women and children.
Jenna Choi Cheuk-yan, HK Jockey Club Chairman's Scholarship Awardee: "We are very used to undergoing different activities. But for some of them, for children especially, they still have years to live. How can we actually help relieve their discomforts? I really want to directly heal them. I want to help them to continue to strive and develop their full potentials."
Apart from regular scholarships, the Jockey Club established "STEM early career research fellowship" to support talents from technological fields.
Hu Delin, a doctoral degree holder, chose to develop his research career in Hong Kong and focuses on his AI-assisted miniature magnetic robots. He has been working on these robots, which could soon be used to conduct medical procedures inside the human body.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships not only provide financial support, but also leadership development activities that will help them become future community leaders.
