The first pair of pandas born in Macao, Jian Jian and Kang Kang, have departed for Chengdu as they embark on their new phase in life at one of the nation's top panda research institute.
Just moments before boarding their flight, giant panda Jian Jian took one last glimpse at the city he called home for the past ten years.
His twin brother Kang Kang, on the other hand, looked somewhat nervous about the journey.
To ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience for the national treasures, Macao authorities transported the pandas in vehicles equipped with air-conditioning systems from Seac Pai Van Park to the airport.
This as Secretary for Administration and Justice Wong Sio Chak, Director of the Department of Social Development of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Macao Ai Yiping, along with some 20 elementary school students bid their farewells to the beloved animals.
This student said she will miss the pandas since they grew up with her generation.
While this student hopes the twins will stay happy and healthy during their time at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
Carers for the pandas said the animals were under quarantine for a month prior to their departure, with their eating habits and mental wellness monitored on a daily basis.
A manager at the city's Municipal Affairs Bureau conservation department said they have prepared bamboo as well as high-fibre biscuits and apples for the pandas' airline meal.
She stressed authorities will prioritise the animals' adaptation to Chengdu's climate and food, which will allow them to learn essential survival skills in a more open space.
Upon their arrival, Jian Jian and Kang Kang will be shuttled to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding before being quarantined for at least a month.
