A man has been arrested following the fatal stabbing of a 47-year-old food delivery rider, surnamed Feng, in central Melbourne in Australia on Friday.

Local police said emergency services were alerted about the attack around Frederick Way, near Queen Victoria Market, just after 8pm on Friday.

The victim was treated by paramedics but later succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

A vigil is scheduled to be held to pay tribute to the deceased who was described as a "down to earth, diligent and humble" man and hailed from the Shanxi province city of Xi An in China.

Detectives believe the victim was one of two food delivery riders who saw somebody tampering with their bikes and confronted him.

An altercation ensued and one of the riders was fatally stabbed and the other man sustained non-life threatening injuries.
