An organisation survey reveals some tourists have experienced food allergies while in Hong Kong, indicating potential risks in the local dining environment for those with food sensitivities.
The organisation conducted a food allergy survey during the Lions Club International Convention July this year, collecting more than 200 responses.
Nearly a quarter, more than 50 surveyed tourists, reported experiencing food allergies, food intolerances or celiac diseases in Hong Kong.
Among them, 30% had a history of severe reaction or anaphylactic shock, yet nearly 60% never carry an epinephrine auto-injector to suppress their allergic reaction while travelling.
The surveyed tourists rated Hong Kong 3.38 out of 5 for food safety, pointing to potential risks in the local catering sector.
The organisation recommends providing food safety and allergy training for front line catering and tourism personnel to create a safer dining environment.
