A Pok Oi Hospital study finds acupuncture can reduce tinnitus and lessen its negative impact on daily life.
Between December 2022 and April 2024, Pok Oi Hospital recruited 90 patients aged 50 to 70 suffering from tinnitus across its Chinese medicine clinics in Yuen Long, Sha Tin and other locations.
The patients received a total of ten acupuncture treatments over five weeks, which included electroacupuncture or electro-warm acupuncture targeted at acupoints around the ears.
The study revealed that after completing the treatment, 46 percent of patients experienced a significant reduction in tinnitus loudness.
In addition, 55 percent showed improvement in the impact of the symptom on daily life, with the severity level improving from "moderate" to "mild".
The findings have been published in the international academic journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine.
