Police officer Chu Chun-kwok, who was paralyzed in an attack while on duty 21 years ago and passed away last month, was accorded a funeral with the highest police honors.
The ceremony was held at the Universal Funeral Parlor in Hung Hom, with a horizontal banner reading "A Noble Spirit Lasts Forever" hanging in the mourning hall.
Chief Executive John Lee arrived to pay his respects, greeted at the entrance by Commissioner of Police Raymond Siu, and they walked into the hall together. Other attendees included Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration Cheuk Wing-hing.
In 2005, while on duty, Chu Chun-kwok was slashed in the neck with a knife by a young man. Massive blood loss led to cerebral hypoxia, resulting in total paralysis.
He passed away at Kwong Wah Hospital mid-last month due to organ failure at the age of 52. Following the farewell ceremony, the coffin was draped with the regional flag and transferred to a hearse converted from a police vehicle, while police officers lined up to salute and bid their final farewell. The coffin was first taken to the Cheung Sha Wan Police Station for a departure ceremony before being interred at Gallant Garden.
