The commerce ministry in Beijing says China and the European Union had intensive consultations on hybrid and electric vehicles and struck a deal that would allow continued export growth.

The ministry says both sides have consented that the export quota from China will be no smaller than the hybrid quota allocated to any other country, following talks aimed at balancing broader economic and trade concerns.

According to the consensus reached, the EU measures must not specifically target China's products or discriminate against its firms.

They agreed on an upward adjustment of hybrid vehicle exports from 2025 figures to ensure opportunities and stable growth for Chinese enterprises.

An EU Commission official says the bloc has agreed to cap hybrid car imports from China at 350,000 vehicles per year in a deal spanning four years, with a 6% annual increase.

The official says the initial measures could kick in from early December.
