Police detain Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi during a protest
against the country's election chief, as opposition parties intensifies
their campaign over a contentious revision of voter lists.
Rahul Gandhi and other opposition lawmakers were detained by police Wednesday
as they marched toward Jantar Mantar, a designated protest site in New Delhi.
The opposition is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner
Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the Election Commission of manipulating voter
registrations to benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling
Bharatiya Janata Party.
Among those who marched was Shafi Parambil, an opposition lawmaker
from the Indian National Congress.
The recent protests are part of a widening campaign by opposition parties,
student groups and India's youth "Cockroach" movement against a nationwide
voter list revision known as the Special Intensive Revision.
A proptester from the Indian Youth Congress says the right
to vote needs to be protected.
We don't have a lot of rights in this country that are absolute.
We have one right in the country that's absolute, that gives us an
access to all our other rights, and if that is taken, well then, well then, we got to fight for it.
The commission and the government deny the allegations and maintains
that claims of voter regiastratinn manipulation are false.
