Sanae Takaichi meets with Trump just before President Xi's visit

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with US President Donald Trump in New York on Tuesday, just before President Xi Jinping's three-day state visit to Washington.

Takaichi told reporters after the meeting that she hopes to see US-China relations contribute to the stability of the international society.

She said she and Trump "discussed various issues surrounding China, with the upcoming US-China summit in mind, and exchanged views in a timely manner."

Takaichi's comments about Taiwan sparked sharp criticisms from Bejing and led to a number of diplomatic and economic consequences.
