Queen Mary lift engineer convicted for improperly issuing safety certs

At Queen Mary Hospital's new block, multiple lifts experienced issues requiring repairs. An engineer responsible for inspections was sentenced to 160 hours of community service for improperly issuing safety certificates and submitting false or misleading documents.

The defendant, Law Wing-chai, was a registered lift engineer at the time. Working for lift subcontractor, On Lik Elevator Company Limited, he inspected the lifts at Queen Mary Hospital's new Clinical Block and issued safety certificates.

It was previously revealed that out of the block's 28 lifts, only 4 were operational. Authorities explained that this was due to structural and dimensional deviations in the lift shaft's outer walls.

Under the Lifts and Escalators Ordinance, a registered lift engineer must thoroughly inspect a lift and its associated equipment or machinery, and may only issue a safety certificate if they deem its design and construction to be sound and in a safe working condition.
