Financial Secretary Paul Chan says Hong Kong has potential

to develop gerontechnology.

Chan's comments came at the 30th anniversary of

Senior Citizen Home Safety Association.

The association says that it has received more than 14.2 million help calls

since its establishment 30 years ago.

It will also launch an intelligent fall detection device

for elderly residents to install at home.

The new device consists of a millimetre-wave radar,

which can alarm the association instantly

if incidents happen to an elder.

Speaking at the event's anniversary,

Financial Secretary Paul Chan projects the spending of

elderly who are aged 65 or above will reach nearly 500 billion dollars by 2034.

As the government is promoting the silver economy,

he says Hong Kong has potential to develop gerontechnology.
