The US National Transportation Safety Board calls the Amazon cargo

plane crash scene at the Miami International Airport "devastating"

and is looking into flight and voice recorders recovered from the plane

in its probe.

This after a Boeing 767 cargo jet ran off the runway as it landed, hitting a van

and an SUV, killing five individuals.

Recordings from the control tower and emergency

services dispatch radio moments after a

Boeing 767 Amazon cargo plane arriving from San Juan, Porto Rico,

ran off the runway at the Miami International Airport offer a peek inside

the chaos as the event unfolded.

The aircraft overran the runway, ploughed across a road used

by warehouse workers.

The Sunday crash, which sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky,

trapped the pilot and copilot in the cockpit.

At the National Transportation Safety Board news conference, Chair

Jennifer Homendy says the five victims were all inside the two vehicles

that were ran over.

Three are critically injured and two others hospitalised with less severe injuries

Homendy describes the scene was in "utter devastation," with visible

skid marks that track from the runway through to the grass.

She says NTSB teams are investigating and will have more

concrete answers soon.

Aviation experts say investigators will seek to determine exactly where

the plane landed, whether it was beyond the normal touchdown zone,

and why the pilots did not abandon the landing.

Investigators will also examine the plane's speed and braking,

weather and wind conditions, the aircraft's mechanical condition

and other factors that could have contributed to the deadly overrun.

Mary Schiavo, who is a pilot and former Inspector General of the

Transportation Department, says video posted online shows

the Amazon plane floating above the runway for an extended period

without flaring the nose upward to force the main landing gear onto the ground.

The crash and its disruption leaves travellers in limbo.

While many are taking things in stride,

some felt uneasy as they waited while seated in flights for many hours.

Airport authorities say 160 flights were cancelled and some 300 delayed

Sunday, plus another 69 flights were cancelled Monday.
