A woman was caught in an FBI sting operation for plotting to bomb the New York State Capitol building because she believed laws were being passed
that were an affront to Islam. She is now facing a federal terrorism charge.
35-year-old Jessica Bowie from Albany New York allegedly sought bomb-making methods from multiple informants linked to extremist group ISIS and purchased materials
needed for making an explosive device from supermarkets.
She also took multiple photos with her phone outside the New York State Capitol at least five times searching for a suitable detonation point for the bomb.
The US Department of Justice alleges that Bowie was arrested Wednesday for planning to detonate a bomb at the New York State Capitol in an attempt to kill public officials.
The indictment states Bowie told informants that if the attack succeeded she would flee to Syria to an area controlled by ISIS and plan to return to the United States
to attack other targets including the New Year's Eve countdown event at Times Square in New York and even the White House and US President Donald Trump.
John Sarcone, first assistant US attorney for New York Northern District said "The allegations in this complaint are deeply disturbing, that someone would harbour such hatred toward our way of life
and seek to target the New York State Capitol and New York state senators. That's an attack on democracy itself, and one we will not tolerate.
Today's announcement will have a chilling effect on anyone in this country who is being radicalised or considering acts of violence, and on our enemies
whose governments support death to America. We are vigilant, we are prepared."
The charges against Bowie carries a maximum prison term of 20 years, a fine of up to 250,000 US dollars and a life time of supervised release.
